The toilet is rarely the first room homeowners think about when planning upgrades. However, a small amount of preparation during construction can make it much easier to install a handheld bidet spray, a smart toilet seat or a complete smart toilet later.

These features can improve personal hygiene, reduce reliance on toilet paper and make the bathroom more comfortable for people of different ages and mobility levels. The difficulty is that they are not always as simple as buying a new seat or connecting a hose to the toilet’s existing water tap.

A compliant installation may require drinking water, hot water, electricity, backflow protection, appropriate waterproofing and a toilet pan that is compatible with the selected equipment. These details are relatively easy to incorporate while a new home is being built. Adding them after the walls have been lined and tiled can be considerably more complicated.

What is a handheld bidet spray?

A handheld bidet spray, sometimes called a bidet douche or trigger spray, is a small spray head installed on a flexible hose beside the toilet.

The user controls the direction and pressure manually. Basic models use cold water only, while more comfortable installations combine hot and cold water through a suitable mixer or temperature-control arrangement.

The main advantages of a handheld spray are simplicity and flexibility. It does not normally require electricity, the spray direction is controlled by the user, and the equipment itself is generally less expensive than an electronic smart seat.

However, a handheld spray can also release water outside the toilet pan. It therefore creates greater potential for wet walls and floors, particularly when used by children, guests or anyone unfamiliar with the controls. The hose, trigger, isolation valve and backflow device must also be selected and installed correctly.

A handheld bidet spray should not be treated as a harmless do-it-yourself accessory attached to the cistern tap. In NSW, it is considered a high-hazard cross-connection because the spray head could potentially come into contact with contaminated water in the toilet pan. It must be supplied from drinking water and protected by a suitable individual high-hazard backflow prevention device, commonly a Reduced Pressure Zone Device, or RPZD.

What is a smart toilet seat?

A smart toilet seat replaces the conventional seat while retaining a compatible toilet pan. It contains an integrated washing nozzle and may provide rear and front washing, adjustable water pressure, adjustable nozzle position, heated water, a heated seat, warm-air drying, deodorising, a night light, user detection and self-cleaning functions.

The exact features depend on the model. Some seats are operated from a control panel attached to the side, while others have a separate remote control that can be mounted on the wall. Current products can allow the user to adjust water, air and seat temperature as well as the washing position and pressure.

A smart seat usually provides more controlled washing than a handheld spray. Because the nozzle operates inside the toilet pan, there is generally less opportunity for water to be sprayed across the room.

It can also be easier for an older person, someone with limited movement or a person recovering from an operation, as washing and drying can be controlled while seated. However, the suitability of any product for an individual accessibility or medical need should be assessed separately.

Does a smart seat need hot water?

This is an important distinction between the two systems.

Many electronic smart seats do not need a separate hot-water pipe. They connect to a conventional cold drinking-water supply and use electricity to heat the washing water inside the seat. For example, current Australian smart-seat products are available that require only a water inlet and an electrical socket.

A cold-water handheld spray also does not require hot water or electricity.

However, if you want a warm handheld spray, both hot and cold water should be brought to the toilet area. The two supplies must be combined through a properly designed mixing or temperature-control arrangement. An untempered hot-water connection should never be left beside the toilet, as excessively hot water can cause serious scalding injuries. The exact configuration and delivery temperature should be determined by a licensed plumber.

Providing hot water during construction preserves more options. The owner can initially install a basic cold-water spray, choose a warm spray immediately or leave capped services available for a future upgrade.

The location of the hot-water system should also be considered. If the toilet is a long distance from the heater, a warm handheld spray may discharge cold water for some time before warm water reaches it. A smart seat with internal water heating may be more practical in that situation.

What should be provided during construction?

A drinking-water supply beside the toilet

Both handheld sprays and smart seats must be connected to a drinking-water supply. They should not be connected to rainwater, recycled water or another non-drinking water service.

The water point should be positioned to suit the intended equipment rather than simply branching from whatever connection is easiest to reach. The location should allow the hose or seat connection to remain neat without being crushed behind the toilet pan.

An accessible isolation valve should also be provided. This allows the spray or seat to be turned off for maintenance, replacement or an extended period when the home is unoccupied.

For maximum flexibility, a new build can include:

  • a cold drinking-water point;
  • a hot-water point where a warm handheld spray may be installed;
  • an accessible isolation arrangement; and
  • space for the required mixer and backflow protection.

Unused services can be capped until the equipment is installed, but their location should be recorded in the plans and colour schedule so that future owners know what has been provided.

A correctly positioned power point

An electronic smart seat requires a nearby power supply. It should not rely on an extension lead running across the floor or from another room.

The power point should be located close enough for the manufacturer’s original cord to reach it without tension, but it should remain discreet and accessible. Its position must also allow the smart seat to be removed for servicing without first removing the toilet or damaging the wall.

The exact location must be coordinated with the selected model and with any nearby shower, bath, basin or other wet-area feature. NSW electrical guidance imposes restrictions on switches and socket outlets within wet-area zones, and domestic circuits require appropriate RCD protection. All new wiring must be completed or supervised by a licensed electrician and documented through the required Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.

It is therefore better to nominate the smart-seat power point on the electrical plan before construction begins. Installing it later may require cutting plasterboard or tiles, routing a new cable and making good the finished surfaces.

Compliant backflow protection

Backflow protection is one of the most frequently overlooked parts of a bidet installation.

A handheld trigger spray requires individual high-hazard protection. In many installations, this means an RPZD. The device must remain accessible for inspection, testing, maintenance and replacement, so it cannot simply be concealed permanently inside a tiled wall.

A smart bidet seat may contain its own compliant high-hazard backflow protection. However, this must be confirmed in the product’s WaterMark description. It is not enough for a product advertisement merely to claim that the seat has a valve or internal protection.

Where the WaterMark description does not confirm suitable integral high-hazard protection, a separate high-hazard backflow device must be installed for that seat.

An external testable device can also create ongoing obligations. Depending on the local water authority and the type of device, commissioning, registration, maintenance and annual testing may be required. These costs should be considered when comparing a basic handheld spray with a WaterMark-certified smart seat that already contains approved integral protection.

Additional waterproofing for a handheld spray

A normal separate toilet room may not have the same waterproofing as a bathroom or shower area. That can become a problem when a handheld spray is added later.

Under the current NCC Housing Provisions for a WC containing a handheld bidet spray, the floor must be waterproof. The provisions also require specified areas around the wall connection to be waterproof or water resistant, including protection around wall junctions, wall-to-floor junctions and penetrations.

For a typical Class 1 home, the provisions include waterproofing the lower part of walls within a 900 mm radius of the spray’s wall connection, water resistance to a greater height within that area, and waterproofing of nearby wall and floor junctions.

This is substantially more than attaching a hose after the toilet has been completed.

When the spray is included in the original design, the waterproofer can install the required membrane before tiling, and the builder can document the work. When it is added to an existing powder room, tiles, skirtings, plasterboard or other finishes may need to be removed so the waterproofing can be upgraded properly.

A smart seat generally keeps the washing nozzle within the toilet pan and does not create the same external spray pattern. Nevertheless, the normal waterproofing requirements for the room still apply, and all water penetrations must be properly sealed.

Sensible water management

Even with compliant waterproofing, the room should be designed for practical use.

A handheld spray can wet the floor if it is pointed incorrectly, dropped while operating or used at excessive pressure. Water-resistant finishes, appropriate tiling and easy-to-clean junctions are therefore preferable around the toilet.

A floor waste may provide additional protection, but it must be designed as part of the floor system. The finished floor needs appropriate falls so that water actually travels towards the waste. Simply placing a grated outlet in a flat or incorrectly graded floor does not provide effective drainage.

The spray holder should also be positioned where the handset can be reached comfortably without twisting, while remaining high enough to discourage small children from operating it unsupervised.

Toilet-pan and seat compatibility

Not every smart seat fits every toilet.

Before purchasing a seat, check:

  • the shape and dimensions of the pan;
  • the distance between the seat-fixing holes;
  • the available space between the fixing points and the cistern;
  • the width and length of the bowl;
  • whether the pan is wall-faced, close-coupled or wall-hung;
  • the position of the water inlet;
  • the side on which the electrical cord and water connection are located; and
  • whether there is sufficient space for a side control panel.

A smart seat that technically attaches to the mounting holes may still project too far forward, interfere with the cistern or look poorly proportioned on the pan.

Back-to-wall toilets and concealed-cistern systems require particular attention. Their clean appearance can leave very little accessible space for additional valves and connections. The intended smart seat or smart-toilet model should ideally be selected before the plumbing rough-in is completed.

Handheld spray or smart seat: which is better?

A handheld spray may suit homeowners who want a simple mechanical system, direct control and the ability to operate without electricity. A cold-water model requires less infrastructure than an electronic seat, although the required backflow protection and waterproofing can make the complete compliant installation more involved than the product price suggests.

A warm handheld spray provides greater comfort, but it requires both hot and cold water, safe mixing, suitable backflow protection and carefully planned waterproofing.

A smart seat is generally better suited to homeowners who value heated washing water, a heated seat, controlled pressure, warm-air drying and reduced overspray. It may also be easier to operate for people with limited reach or movement.

Its disadvantages include a higher purchase price, dependence on electricity, compatibility limitations and more electronic components that may eventually require servicing or replacement.

There is no need to assume that the most expensive system is automatically the best. The correct choice depends on the users, the room layout, the available services, the preferred level of comfort and the willingness to maintain the equipment.

Can these features be added to an existing home?

In many cases, yes.

A smart seat can be a relatively straightforward retrofit where the existing toilet pan is compatible, a suitable drinking-water connection is available and a compliant power point can be installed nearby. A product with approved integral high-hazard backflow protection can simplify the plumbing arrangement.

The work becomes more difficult where the toilet has no nearby electrical circuit, the existing pan is unsuitable or the water connection is concealed behind a wall-faced suite. The toilet may need to be replaced as part of the upgrade.

Installing a handheld spray in an existing home can require more substantial work. A compliant installation may involve:

  • opening the wall to provide new water services;
  • bringing hot water into the room;
  • installing a mixer and high-hazard backflow device;
  • upgrading the room’s waterproofing;
  • replacing wall and floor finishes;
  • adding a floor waste or correcting floor falls; and
  • creating accessible space for valves and future testing.

The feasibility depends on whether the home has timber or concrete floors, where the hot-water service is located, whether pipes can be routed through the ceiling or subfloor, and how the existing toilet has been constructed.

For this reason, a warm handheld spray is often best installed as part of a planned toilet or bathroom renovation rather than as an isolated accessory.

Questions to ask before construction begins

Before finalising the plans, confirm whether the home will have a handheld spray, a smart seat, a complete smart toilet or only future provisions.

The plans and specifications should identify the selected toilet pan, cold- and hot-water points, isolation valves, power-point location, backflow protection, waterproofing extent, floor finish, drainage arrangement and access for future maintenance.

It is also worth confirming whether the selected smart seat has WaterMark-documented integral high-hazard protection and whether any separate testable device will create ongoing registration or annual testing obligations.

Planning these details together avoids the common situation where the electrical point is on the wrong side, the seat does not fit the pan, the hot-water connection is missing or a finished toilet room must be dismantled to add compliant waterproofing.
