The pit must sit where the water actually goes
One of the most common drainage failures is also one of the simplest: the surface inlet is not located at the true low point. A builder may install the pit at the position shown on a plan but fail to shape the completed yard towards it. The grate then sits on a slight rise while water collects several metres away.
Landscaping can create the same problem after the drainage system has been installed. Additional soil, turf, garden edging or paving may alter the final levels. Even a small ridge can interrupt the intended flow and create a new depression elsewhere in the yard.
A grate is only an entrance
A surface inlet does not pull water towards itself. It is simply an opening into the underground system. Gravity must first deliver the water to the grate. The surrounding ground therefore needs a continuous and practical fall towards the inlet, without a hump, raised edge or reverse slope blocking the route.
The same principle applies below ground. After water enters the pit, the pipe must continue falling towards the outlet. A correctly positioned surface pit cannot compensate for an underground line that is flat, back-falling or connected to an outlet that is too high.
Why more holes usually do not help
When a pit appears slow, it is tempting to enlarge the grate openings or drill extra holes. This only assists when water is already reaching the inlet and the grate itself is the restriction. It will not correct a pit installed above the surrounding low point, a yard falling towards the house, a damaged pipe or a line with insufficient fall.
Adding another small pit nearby can also fail if the same incorrect levels remain. A new inlet must be placed and set at a height that fits the actual surface profile, and it must connect to a pipe system capable of carrying the water away.
Levels should be checked before landscaping is finished
The most economical time to confirm drainage is before turf, gardens and paving conceal the earthworks. The proposed pit heights, surface falls and discharge levels should be checked against the completed site, not assumed from a drawing alone. Water testing can then confirm whether the intended pathway works.
Where a completed yard already ponds, a level survey may be needed to identify the exact high and low points. Rectification may involve lowering or relocating pits, regrading the surface and correcting the underground pipework. The visible puddle is only the symptom; the levels determine the solution.
