Concrete is often selected for backyards because it creates a firm, durable surface suitable for outdoor furniture, bins, clotheslines, barbeques and frequently used paths.

It can also be more economical than premium paving or natural stone. However, “concrete” is not a single finish. Plain broom-finished concrete, coloured concrete, exposed aggregate and decorative stencilled surfaces each have different advantages and disadvantages.

Plain broom-finished concrete

Plain concrete with a lightly textured broom finish is one of the most practical choices for side paths, utility areas and access between the house and clothesline.

It does not attempt to imitate another material. The texture can provide useful grip, minor dirt is not always immediately obvious and local wear is less visually disruptive than it may be on a decorative coating.

The main disadvantage is appearance. Some owners consider plain concrete too basic for a main entertaining area. It may also develop visible discolouration, stains and patching over time.

Coloured concrete

Colour can be incorporated into the concrete or applied through a surface system, depending on the specified product.

Coloured concrete can coordinate with the roof, brickwork, render and landscaping. Mid-range colours often conceal ordinary dust and marks better than very pale or extremely dark finishes.

Colour does not eliminate ordinary concrete behaviour. The surface can still crack, stain or weather. Different pours may not match exactly, and a later repair may remain visible. Sealers and finishing systems may also change the final colour and surface texture.

Exposed aggregate

Exposed aggregate reveals the decorative stones within the concrete surface. It is widely used for driveways, paths, pool surrounds and contemporary outdoor areas.

Its advantages include a more decorative appearance, useful surface texture and the ability to conceal some ordinary dirt and variation.

Its disadvantages should also be considered. A coarse aggregate can be uncomfortable for children sitting or crawling on the surface and may be unpleasant under bare feet. Food, soil and small debris can collect in a heavily textured finish. Poor placement or finishing may result in an inconsistent appearance or local stone loss.

The owner should inspect a realistic sample rather than selecting the finish from a small photograph. Aggregate size, colour, concrete background and exposure depth all change the final result.

Stencilled and decorative concrete

Stencilled concrete can imitate the pattern of pavers, tiles or stone without creating individual joints across the entire area. It provides a broad range of colours and patterns and can make a basic slab more decorative.

The main weakness is repairability. A crack, stain or later service cut can be difficult to patch without leaving a noticeable difference in colour and pattern. Surface coatings and sealers may also wear unevenly in high-traffic areas.

A glossy sealer should not be selected solely for appearance. The completed surface must remain suitable for its external location when wet.

Honed and smoother finishes

Honed concrete can create a refined appearance, but smoother finishes require careful slip-resistance selection, particularly near pools, outdoor showers and uncovered entertaining areas.

The owner should not assume that every decorative concrete finish is automatically suitable for every external location. Product documentation, the proposed sealer and the likely wet conditions all need to be considered.

Concrete is strong, but it can still crack

Control joints are used to manage where ordinary shrinkage movement is more likely to occur. They reduce random cracking but do not guarantee that a concrete surface will remain completely crack-free.

Concrete may be affected by:

  • subgrade movement;
  • poor compaction;
  • tree roots;
  • inadequate joint design;
  • changes in slab thickness;
  • concentrated loads;
  • service trenches; and
  • soil moisture changes.

A hairline crack does not necessarily mean that the slab has failed. However, substantial movement, differential levels or recurring cracks may indicate a problem below the surface.

Replacing or disguising a damaged decorative concrete finish can be more difficult than lifting and relaying individual pavers.

Plan underground services before pouring

A concrete slab makes later access to underground pipes, conduits and drains more disruptive. Repairs may require saw-cutting and removing part of the slab.

Before the concrete is poured, it is sensible to confirm the location of stormwater pipes, sewer lines, electrical conduits, irrigation, future outdoor power and any proposed garden lighting.

Where future access is reasonably foreseeable, removable pavers or a garden zone may be a better surface above the service route.

Drainage must be formed into the concrete

Once a continuous slab has been poured, its surface falls are difficult to change.

The slab needs to direct water towards the intended collection point without creating ponding beside the house, at a doorway or in a low corner. Strip drains and grated pits only work when the surrounding concrete falls towards them.

The finished surface must also integrate with adjoining lawn, paving and garden levels. A poorly planned concrete edge can create a step, trap water or leave the lawn lower than the hard surface.

Large hard surfaces can increase runoff and heat

Concrete is generally an impermeable surface. Increasing the concreted area can increase the volume and speed of stormwater runoff unless it is balanced with appropriate drainage and permeable landscaping.

Hard surfaces also absorb and release heat. NSW urban-heat guidance identifies extensive dark and paved surfaces as contributors to higher local temperatures. Shade, lighter finishes, trees and areas of living landscape can reduce the effect.

Where concrete works best

Concrete is particularly effective for:

  • frequently used access paths;
  • bin and utility areas;
  • clothesline zones;
  • small extensions to an existing concrete alfresco;
  • areas requiring a stable surface for furniture; and
  • locations where weeds and loose stones would be inconvenient.

It is less attractive where the owner may later need to access services, wants a soft play surface or intends to substantially change the garden layout.

A practical backyard often uses concrete selectively rather than pouring one continuous slab over every available area.
