Tiles and pavers are among the most practical backyard surfaces for outdoor dining, clotheslines, barbeque areas, paths and connections between the house, garage and garden.
They are not all the same. An outdoor porcelain tile installed over a concrete slab performs differently from a concrete paver laid over a compacted base. Natural stone has different maintenance requirements again.
The appearance is important, but it should not be the first consideration. The surface must also suit the expected traffic, exposure to rain, ground conditions, surrounding levels and the way the area will be used.
Outdoor porcelain tiles
Outdoor porcelain tiles can create a clean, contemporary appearance and provide continuity between an internal living area and an alfresco space. Properly specified outdoor porcelain normally has low water absorption and is available in a wide range of colours, textures and large-format sizes.
Its advantages include:
- a consistent appearance;
- relatively easy cleaning;
- good resistance to ordinary staining;
- a wide choice of designs; and
- the ability to coordinate indoor and outdoor finishes.
The disadvantages are mainly related to installation and product selection.
Conventional outdoor tiles generally require a stable substrate, commonly a properly constructed concrete slab. The adhesive, grout, movement joints, drainage and substrate preparation all affect long-term performance. If the slab moves or cracks, the tiled finish may also crack. Poorly installed large-format tiles may sound hollow, become loose or retain water beneath them.
A smooth tile selected because it looks attractive in a showroom may become slippery outdoors. The product should have documented slip-resistance testing suitable for its intended location, particularly where the surface will be exposed to rain or used near a pool. AS 4586 classifies the slip resistance of new pedestrian surface materials, but the appropriate classification depends on the particular use and conditions.
Concrete pavers
Concrete pavers are available in numerous sizes, shapes, textures and colours. They can create anything from a simple utility path to a formal entertaining area.
One major advantage is repairability. When pavers are laid over a suitable prepared base, an individual unit can often be lifted and replaced. A section may also be temporarily removed to access a buried service or correct local settlement.
Concrete pavers can be more forgiving than a fully tiled slab, but they still require proper preparation. An inadequately compacted base may settle unevenly, producing rocking pavers, low spots and trip edges. Jointing material can wash out, weeds can establish in accumulated surface dirt and poorly restrained edges can spread.
Colours may also change with age and exposure. Replacing one old paver with a newly manufactured unit may leave a visible colour difference even when the nominal product is the same.
Clay pavers
Clay pavers create a warmer and more traditional appearance. Their colour is generally part of the fired material rather than simply a surface coating, which can help the finish age naturally.
They work particularly well with brick homes, traditional landscaping and smaller-format patterns. Individual pavers can generally be replaced, and slight colour variations may contribute to the overall character.
Potential disadvantages include dimensional variation, more visible joints and a less contemporary appearance where the owner wants a seamless large-format finish. Some clay products may also develop surface salts or staining depending on the material, installation and moisture conditions.
Natural stone
Natural stone can produce a high-quality and individual result because no two pieces are precisely identical. Common options include sandstone, travertine, granite, limestone and bluestone.
The advantages are appearance, natural variation and the ability to coordinate the surface with retaining walls, pool coping and garden features.
The disadvantages depend heavily on the particular stone. Some products are porous and may absorb stains. Some require sealing. Others can be affected by salts, weathering or inappropriate cleaning chemicals. A finish that appears textured while dry may behave differently when wet.
Before selecting natural stone, it is sensible to inspect full-size samples in both wet and dry conditions. The owner should also understand whether the product requires sealing, how often that treatment may need to be renewed and whether the chosen finish is appropriate for a wet external area.
Drainage and levels matter more than the pattern
Tiles and pavers cannot compensate for incorrect levels.
Water must fall away from the house and towards an appropriate collection or discharge point. Door thresholds, garage openings, existing concrete, garden beds, retaining walls and the level of the external walls must all be coordinated.
Paving should not simply be raised against the house to eliminate a step. Doing so can interfere with external wall, drainage and threshold details. Similarly, installing a grated drain will not help if the surrounding surface does not actually fall towards it.
Large impermeable paved areas also create more runoff than lawns and planted areas. Australian Government stormwater guidance recommends minimising excessive impervious surfaces and incorporating permeable paving, lawns, garden areas, pebble paths and other infiltration measures where the site conditions permit.
Are permeable pavers the solution?
Permeable paving can reduce surface runoff by allowing water to pass through wider or specially designed joints into an underlying drainage layer.
However, the word permeable does not mean that water can disappear into every site indefinitely. Heavy clay, shallow rock, a high groundwater level or poorly draining fill may limit infiltration. The base and overflow arrangement still require design.
Permeable paving can be valuable, but it should be treated as part of a complete stormwater strategy rather than as a substitute for understanding the site.
Heat and comfort
Dark pavers, dense stone and exposed areas without shade may become hot during summer. Large expanses of hard paving can also make the backyard feel visually harsh and increase reflected heat around the house.
Lighter colours, shade planting, pergolas and a balanced combination of hard and soft landscaping can create a more comfortable result. The selected colour should still be practical: very pale surfaces may show soil, leaf tannins, rust and tyre marks more readily.
Which material is best?
Outdoor porcelain is well suited to a refined alfresco area with a stable substrate and carefully coordinated thresholds.
Concrete pavers are practical where repairability, flexibility and a broad price range are priorities.
Clay pavers suit traditional architecture and owners who prefer smaller-format, naturally varied surfaces.
Natural stone is appropriate where the owner values a premium, individual finish and accepts the product-specific maintenance requirements.
The best selection is therefore not simply the most expensive or fashionable material. It is the one that performs correctly in its intended location.
